Life has a way of throwing curveballs, doesn’t it? Sometimes, it feels like things are going smoothly, and then—bam—something unexpected happens, and you find yourself wondering, “What now?” I think we’ve all been there at one point or another. And in those moments, we often hear people say, “Just trust God.” But what does that even mean? And, more importantly, how do you do it when life feels like it’s unraveling?

Trusting God is one of those things that sounds a lot easier than it feels. The concept is simple, but the practice? Well, that’s a whole different ball game. Let’s talk about it for a second, because, in my experience, trusting God isn’t about having everything figured out or living a perfect, problem-free life. It’s about surrender. It’s about believing that, even when life doesn’t make sense, there’s someone greater holding it all together.

Trusting God doesn’t require us to understand everything. I think we get caught up in this idea that if we don’t understand the “why” or the “how,” then we can’t trust. But the truth is, sometimes the answers aren’t clear. Sometimes, we don’t get the “why,” and we sure as heck don’t get the “how” either. But faith doesn’t rely on having all the answers.

Take a moment and think about any relationship in your life—whether it’s with a partner, a friend, or a family member. Do you always understand their actions or their decisions? Probably not. But you trust them because of the history you’ve shared, the things you’ve walked through together. It’s the same with God. We may not always understand His ways, but we trust Him because we’ve seen His faithfulness over time. We’ve felt it. We’ve experienced it.

And I know… it’s easy to trust God when things are good, right? When everything’s lined up perfectly and you can see the next step clearly, it’s like you’re walking with your hand in His, and everything just makes sense. But what about when life is a mess? When your plans fall apart? When you’re standing at a crossroads, not knowing which way to turn?

Trusting God in the hard times is where faith gets real. It’s easy to have faith when the road is smooth, but when it’s full of potholes, detours, and dead ends? That’s when we have to make a choice. We can choose to lean into our faith or we can let fear take the wheel. And trust me, I’ve been there. It’s hard to trust God when it feels like your world is crumbling. But here’s what I’ve learned: trusting God in those moments doesn’t mean everything is going to turn out the way you want it to. It means trusting that He’s with you, even in the pain, even in the confusion. It means having the confidence that He’s working all things together for your good, even if it doesn’t feel like it in the moment.

Another part of trusting God is learning to surrender our timing. Oh boy, this one hits hard. We’re a “now” society. We want things fixed, sorted, and wrapped up in a nice, neat bow ASAP. But God’s timing isn’t our timing. And that’s where a lot of the tension comes in. We pray, we hope, we wait, and sometimes it feels like we’re waiting forever. But here’s the thing: just because things don’t happen on our timeline doesn’t mean they’re not happening.

Trusting God means understanding that He’s not running on our schedule. His plans for us are bigger and better than anything we could dream up. Sometimes, we have to wait for the right moment, the right circumstances, the right timing for everything to align. And though it can feel like we’re in limbo, that’s when God is teaching us patience, resilience, and dependence on Him.

One of the biggest myths about faith is that we have to “have it all together” before we can trust God. Like, we need to clean up our mess, pull ourselves together, and then present ourselves to God as if He’ll only accept the polished version of us. But that’s not how He works.

Trusting God means being honest about where you’re at. It means showing up as you are—broken, messy, confused, whatever it may be—and saying, “God, I trust You even though I don’t get it. I trust You even though I’m struggling.” Trusting God isn’t about being perfect; it’s about being real.

This is another big one that I think we miss sometimes. Trusting God isn’t a one-time decision. It’s a journey. It’s something we have to choose every day, sometimes multiple times a day, depending on what we’re walking through. And that’s okay. There’s no shame in struggling to trust, because faith isn’t a destination. It’s a process. It’s a continual letting go and surrendering over and over again.

If you’re finding it hard to trust right now, you’re not alone. It’s not easy, and you don’t have to have it all figured out to take that first step. Trusting God is a relationship, and like any relationship, it takes time to build. But when we choose to trust Him—when we choose to lean into His promises, even in the tough moments—that’s when the magic happens.

So, if you’re feeling uncertain or unsure, know this: trusting God doesn’t mean you have to have everything figured out. It doesn’t mean life will always be easy. But it does mean you have a steady anchor, no matter what waves come your way. And that’s something worth holding on to.

Have a great week.
