If there’s one thing the last three years have taught me, it’s that taking care of our bodies isn’t just “self-care” — it’s a necessity, especially when we have little ones depending on us.
I’ve dealt with back pain for about three years now. Some days it’s a dull ache, other days it’s a sharp reminder that my body has limits. There are even days where I feel on top of the world. Recently, after doing wallballs at the gym, my back flared up worse than it has in a long time. This was the first major flare since having my baby six months ago, and honestly, it stopped me in my tracks.
I realized something in that moment: as much as I love pushing myself in workouts, now is not the season for overdoing it. My body has been through so much — pregnancy, birth, sleepless nights, and the everyday physical demands of caring for my baby. It needs fuel, movement, and rest, not reckless intensity.
Proper nutrition, regular stretching, and mindful training aren’t just about chasing a performance goal or hitting a certain number on the scale. They’re about keeping me healthy enough to do the most important job in the world — being there for my child. When my back hurts, I can’t pick her up as easily. I can’t get down on the floor to play without wincing. I can’t be the mom I want to be.
It’s easy to think “I’ll be fine” and keep pushing, but our bodies will eventually speak up — and sometimes, they’ll speak loudly. Now, I’m taking this as my cue to slow down, focus on healing, and give my body what it truly needs: nutrient-dense foods, gentle stretching, smart workouts, and rest.
If you’re in a similar season, I hope you give yourself permission to do the same. Our health isn’t selfish — it’s the foundation that allows us to show up fully for our families.
Thank you for sharing your wisdom and insight, coach Emma. Sending you prayers for healing and recovery!
Have a great week!
