Water the flowers, not the weeds.
I saw this memory on Facebook last week and it spoke to me. What we water, what we focus on, is what grows.
Water the flowers… the positive thoughts and things we want and have, and that’s what grows.
Water the weeds… the negative thoughts we let fester, and that’s what grows.
I challenge you to dig deep… what are you watering?
I’m a work in progress when it comes to this. I’ll admit though, I’m not the best at watering the flowers. In fact, I’m a plant killer.
I’m guilty of focusing too much on the negatives. On wondering what if. Of thinking the worst. I definitely water the weeds too much.
Most of the time, what I’m worried about… what I’m focused on in the “what if,” doesn’t even happen. I’ve wasted my time worrying over nothing.
And when I’m focused on the positives, on all the good things that have happened or are happening, I am more positive. And I see the good in things more than anything else… even when times are tough.
This is true in the gym too. When I’m lifting heavy or practicing a new movement, particularly gymnastics, if I focus on the negative side of things… “I can’t do this. This is too heavy. I’ve never done this before. I won’t be able to lift this. I won’t be able to do this.” Inevitably, I fail. I’m in my own head and it’s a disaster before it even starts.
However, the opposite is also true. If I approach the barbell or rig or rings or whatever it is with positivity… “I can do this. I’ve lifted this before. I know what I’m doing. This is light weight. Same thing as before.” I am usually successful. And even if I’m not, I’m not down on myself. I know what I need to do next time to be successful.
It really is true when they say that it all starts in the mind. Literally with every part of your life.
“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re right.” Henry Ford
Moral of the story… think positive. Think you can. Think of your success. Focus on and water the flowers.
Because frankly, the alternative is a real drag.
I hope you have a fantastic week, and that you spend more time watering the flowers.
We’ll see you in the gym!
